Kassim Majaliwa Majaliwa (born on December 22, 1960) is a well-known Tanzanian politician. He has been the Prime Minister of Tanzania since 2015. The President of Tanzania, John Magufuli, chose him for this important role after the 2015 Tanzanian general election. Majaliwa is a member of the main political party in Tanzania, called Chama Cha Mapinduzi. He also serves as a Member of Parliament for the area of Ruangwa.
Early Life and Education
Kassim Majaliwa was born in a Muslim family on December 22, 1960. His birthplace was Mnacho village, which is in the Ruangwa District of the Lindi Region. He finished his high school studies at Kigonsera Secondary School in 1983.
After school, he worked as a teacher for 16 years, until 1999. During this time, he continued his education. He earned a teaching diploma from Mtwara Teacher Training College in 1993. Later, in 1998, he received a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Dar es Salaam.
From 1999 to 2006, Majaliwa was active in the teachers' trade union. He served as a district secretary and then a regional secretary for the Tanzania Teachers' Association. In 2006, he was chosen to be the district commissioner for Urambo district. He held this position until he was elected to the Parliament in 2010.
Political Career
Majaliwa first became a Member of Parliament in the 2010 Tanzanian general election. He won his seat for the Chama Cha Mapinduzi party in the Ruangwa area. From 2010 to 2015, he worked as a Deputy Minister. This role was in the Prime Minister's Office, dealing with regional and local government matters.
In the 2015 Tanzanian general election, Majaliwa was reelected as the Member of Parliament for Ruangwa. He won against Omari Makota from the Civic United Front party. Majaliwa received 55% of the votes.
After the 2015 election, John Magufuli became the President of Tanzania. On November 19, 2015, President Magufuli chose Kassim Majaliwa to be the new Prime Minister. His appointment was a surprise to many, even to Majaliwa himself, because he was relatively new to national politics.
People believed he was chosen because he is humble, honest, and works very hard. Also, he comes from the southern part of Tanzania, which was a factor in choosing the new Prime Minister. His background as a teacher, a trade union leader, and a deputy minister was also seen as helpful. President Magufuli wanted to improve the education system, and Majaliwa's experience was a good fit. Some opposition groups, however, felt he lacked enough experience for such a big role.
