Katsu curry (Japanese: カツカレー, romanized: katsukarē) is a super popular Japanese meal. It's a tasty combination of a crispy pork cutlet called tonkatsu and rich Japanese curry. This yummy dish is usually served with a side of fluffy Japanese rice.
You'll find Katsu curry on a big plate. People typically eat it with a spoon or a fork. The best part is that the crispy cutlet is often already sliced into strips. This means you don't even need a knife to enjoy your meal!
Katsu curry is usually eaten as a main course. You can enjoy it with a glass of water or a warm bowl of miso soup. In Japan, there are even special fast-food restaurants just for Katsu curry. These places offer different kinds of meat and curry flavors. Sometimes, instead of pork, you can have a chicken cutlet.
In Japan, "Katsu curry" always means a dish with a cutlet and curry. But in some other countries, like the UK, people might use the name "Katsu curry" for any type of Japanese curry, even without the cutlet.
History of Katsu Curry
Have you ever wondered where Katsu curry came from? This delicious dish is believed to have started in 1948. It was created at a restaurant called Ginza Swiss in Ginza, Tokyo, Japan. This restaurant served yōshoku, which is Japanese food with Western influences.
A famous baseball player named Shigeru Chiba loved to eat at Ginza Swiss. He played for the Yomiuri Giants. One day, he told the restaurant that it was too much trouble to eat his curry and his tonkatsu (pork cutlet) separately. He wished they were combined!
So, the restaurant decided to put them together on one plate. This is how Katsu curry was born! Today, Ginza Swiss still proudly advertises this dish. They call it the "original curry" and "Chiba-san's curry" on their menu.
