Katty Kay, born on November 14, 1964, is a well-known journalist, author, and TV presenter from Britain and Switzerland. She used to host BBC World News America and Beyond 100 Days on BBC Four and BBC News. She has also led the BBC's coverage of two big US Presidential elections. You can often see her on NBC News's Morning Joe.

Katty has written two books with ABC News reporter Claire Shipman. These books are Womenomics (published in 2009) and The Confidence Code (published in 2014). Since April 2024, Katty has also been a co-host of the podcast The Rest is Politics: US Edition.

She is also a board member at the International Women's Media Foundation, which supports women in media.

Early Life and Education

Katty was born in Wallingford, England, in 1964. She grew up in a town called Blewbury. She has two brothers and one sister.

Because her dad was a British diplomat, Katty lived in different Middle Eastern countries when she was a kid. She went to Oxford University, where she studied modern languages. She can speak French and Italian very well. She finished her degree in 1988.

Katty's Career Journey

After college, Katty worked briefly at the Bank of England. But she decided economics wasn't for her. Instead, she went to Zimbabwe to work for an aid organization.

Soon after, a friend named Matt Frei encouraged her to try journalism. Katty joined the BBC in 1990. Her first job was reporting from Zimbabwe for the African section of the BBC World Service.

She then moved back to London to work for BBC radio. Later, in 1992, she was sent to Tokyo for BBC News television. In 1996, she moved to Washington, D.C., in the United States.

After a short time working for The Times newspaper, she returned to the BBC in 2002. She worked as a freelance journalist, still based in the United States.

Reporting for BBC World News

From 2004, Katty co-hosted the BBC World news shows with Mike Embley. These shows were seen on many TV stations across the US and on BBC America.

In 2007, she became a main reporter for BBC World's news show, BBC World News America. This show was based in Washington. She was the main anchor for this show until June 2021.

Other TV Appearances

Katty often appears as a guest on other TV shows. You might have seen her on Morning Joe and Meet the Press on NBC. She has also been on Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO. In the past, she appeared on Larry King Live on CNN.

She also sometimes filled in for Diane Rehm on her radio show, The Diane Rehm Show, on National Public Radio (NPR).

Election Coverage

Katty has led the BBC's coverage of US Presidential Election nights. She did this in 2016 and 2020. For both elections, she presented with Andrew Neil. In 2021, she also anchored the BBC's coverage of the Presidential inauguration for Joe Biden.

On June 24, 2021, Katty announced that it would be her last broadcast for the BBC. However, in March 2022, it was shared that Katty would return to the BBC. She came back as a US Special Correspondent for BBC Studios. In this role, she works on documentaries, podcasts, and news. She also continues to anchor US Election Night coverage.

In April 2024, it was announced that Katty would host The Rest is Politics: US Edition. She hosts this podcast with Anthony Scaramucci, who used to work for Donald Trump.

Personal Life

Katty Kay has been married since 1989 to Tom Carver. He is a former BBC reporter.

Katty and Tom have four children. She has lived in the Georgetown area of Washington, D.C., since 1996. In 2021, she became a Swiss citizen. Her father, who passed away in 2021, was Swiss.
