Katherine "Katty" Kay (born 14 November 1964) is a British-Swiss journalist and author. She is well-known for her work as a news presenter. She used to host BBC World News America and Beyond 100 Days for the BBC. Katty also appears weekly on NBC News on the show Morning Joe.

Katty Kay has written books with ABC News correspondent Claire Shipman. These include Womenomics (2009) and The Confidence Code (2014). She also co-hosted a podcast called When Katty Met Carlos. In 2021, she joined Ozy Media but left a few months later. This happened after reports raised questions about the company's business. Since April 2024, Katty Kay has co-hosted the podcast The Rest is Politics: US Edition.

Katty is also a board member for the International Women's Media Foundation. This group supports women in media around the world.

Early Life and Education

Katty Kay was born on 14 November 1964 in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, England. She grew up in a place called Blewbury. She has two brothers and one sister. Her family has both English and Swiss roots.

As a child, Katty lived in different countries in the Middle East. This was because her father worked there as a British diplomat. She later studied modern languages at St Hilda's College, Oxford. She can speak French and Italian very well. She finished her degree in 1988.

Katty Kay's Career in Journalism

After college, Katty briefly worked for the Bank of England. She then decided that a career in economics was not for her. She left to work for an aid agency in Zimbabwe.

A friend, Matt Frei, encouraged her to become a journalist. Katty joined the BBC in 1990. Her first role was as a correspondent in Zimbabwe for the BBC World Service. She then worked for BBC World Service radio in London. In 1992, she moved to Tokyo for BBC News television. Later, in 1996, she moved to Washington, D.C..

She worked for The Times newspaper for a short time. In 2002, she returned to the BBC as a freelance journalist. She was based in the United States.

Reporting for BBC World News

From June 2004, Katty Kay co-presented BBC World news bulletins. These shows were seen on many TV stations in the US and on BBC America. In October 2007, she became a correspondent for BBC World News America. This was a news show based in Washington. She was the main anchor for this show until June 2021.

Katty also often appeared as a guest on other news shows. These included Morning Joe and Meet the Press on NBC. She also appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO.

Covering US Presidential Elections

Katty Kay led the BBC's coverage of US presidential election nights. She covered both the 2016 and 2020 elections. For both events, she presented with Andrew Neil. In 2021, she also anchored the BBC's coverage of the inauguration of Joe Biden.

On 24 June 2021, Katty announced her last broadcast for the BBC. She then joined Ozy Media. However, she resigned in September 2021. This happened when she learned about serious questions regarding the company's business. In March 2022, it was announced that Katty would return to the BBC. She became the US Special Correspondent for BBC Studios. In this role, she works on documentaries, podcasts, and news. She also continues to anchor US Election Night coverage.

In April 2024, it was announced that Katty Kay would host The Rest Is Politics: US Edition. She hosts this podcast with Anthony Scaramucci.

Personal Life

In 1989, Katty Kay married Tom Carver. He was also a reporter for the BBC. He later became a leader in global communications.

Katty has four children. She has lived in the Georgetown area of Washington, D.C., since 1996. In 2021, she became a Swiss citizen. Her father, who passed away in January 2021, was Swiss.
