Kay Stonham grew up in East London. She went to William Morris Senior High School. After that, she studied at Rose Bruford College, where she graduated in 1977. Later, she earned a master's degree from Royal Holloway, University of London. This degree was in screenwriting, which is the art of writing scripts for films and television.

Her early writing career included working on the BBC Radio 4 series Robin and Wendy's Wet Weekends. She helped create and write the first two series. She also wrote the third and fourth series all by herself. In this radio show, she played the character of Wendy Mayfield.
