History of Kellyville
How Kellyville Began
Kellyville is named after James E. Kelly. He started a local trading post here in 1892. A trading post was like a store where people could buy and sell goods. He also opened the town's first post office in 1893.
A railroad line was built through Kellyville in 1898. This was the St. Louis and Oklahoma City Railroad. It later became part of the "Frisco" railway system.
Train Disaster and Oil Boom
A very sad train accident happened near Kellyville in 1917. Two Frisco trains crashed, and 23 people died. Many others were hurt. It was one of the worst train accidents in Oklahoma's history.
In 1915, oil and gas were found nearby. This discovery led to a big population increase. A refinery was built in Kellyville to process the oil. By 1930, the town's population had grown to 548 people.
Modern Kellyville
Even though oil and gas production slowed down, Kellyville's population kept growing. Today, many people who live in Kellyville travel to nearby cities for work. They commute to jobs in Sapulpa and Tulsa.
A company called Webco Industries is a major employer in Kellyville. In 2008, they opened a factory there. This factory makes special metal tubes that resist rust. The factory was made much bigger in 2018.
In the early 1970s, there was a plan for Oklahoma's first ski resort in Kellyville. The idea was to use fake snow. However, the weather in the area was not cold enough for long, so the plan did not work out.
Geography of Kellyville
Kellyville is located about 8 miles (13 km) southwest of Sapulpa. Sapulpa is the main city in Creek County. Kellyville is also located on Oklahoma State Highway 66. This highway used to be part of the famous U.S. Route 66.
The town covers an area of about 1.93 square miles (5.0 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
