Kelsey is a small community called a hamlet in central Alberta, Canada. It is part of Camrose County. You can find Kelsey off Highway 850. It's about 125 kilometers (78 miles) southeast of Edmonton. It's also about 30 kilometers (19 miles) southeast of Camrose, which is the closest big town for shopping and services.

Kelsey has a few local businesses, a community hall for events, and a post office. Kids in Kelsey go to school in nearby villages like Rosalind and Bawlf. These villages also provide fire services for Kelsey.

Kelsey's Early Days

In 1902, a family named Mr. and Mrs. Moses Kelsey and their son Earl moved to this area. They came all the way from Milbank, South Dakota in the United States. They claimed a piece of land, and the southeast corner of it later became the spot for the community. Another early settler, Milton Zimmerman, suggested naming the community after the Kelsey family.

The Railway Arrives

In 1915, the Canadian National Railway started building a railway line. It went southeast from Camrose and passed right through where Kelsey would soon be. This part of the railway is very special. It's known for being the longest straight stretch of railway in North America! Some people even say it might be the longest in the world.

A year later, in 1916, a station house was built in Kelsey. This was a building where trains stopped and people could get on or off. Charlie Cooper and his family were the first to live in the station house. The town also got its first grain elevator and two stores. A grain elevator is a tall building used to store grain from farms.

Growing as a Community

By 1920, telephone service came to the Kelsey area, connecting people to the outside world. In the next few years, the community built the Kelsey Union Church, a dance hall for fun events, and a one-room school for children. In 1951, Kelsey got its first power line, bringing electricity to homes and businesses.

People of Kelsey

The number of people living in Kelsey is counted every few years. In the 2021 Census, 15 people lived in Kelsey. They lived in 8 of the 9 homes available. This number was the same as in 2016. The land area of Kelsey is about 0.45 square kilometers (0.17 square miles). This means there were about 33 people living in each square kilometer in 2021.
