History of Kennett
People first built log cabins in this area in the early 1800s. They called their settlement Chilletecaux, named after a Delaware Indian chief. In the late 1840s, the town's name changed to Butler.
However, there were problems with mail delivery because other places had the same name. So, the settlement was renamed Kennett. This new name honored Luther Martin Kennett, who was the mayor of St. Louis at the time.
In the 1890s, a railroad came to Kennett. This helped the town grow a lot. Around the same time, the state started a huge project to drain the St. Francis River basin. This area used to be a floodplain and wetlands. In the 1900s, after many trees were cut down, the land was used to grow crops like cotton.
