History of Kent Street Senior High School
People wanted a high school south of the Swan River for many years. In the 1920s, there were ideas for a new school. However, a lack of money, especially during the Great Depression, delayed these plans.
In 1932, a study found many children in South Perth and Victoria Park needed a high school. Construction of the first building began in 1939. The school opened in 1940 as Kent Street Central School. It started with 354 students.
The school buildings are important historical sites. They are listed on the Western Australia Heritage Register. They are known for their unique brick and tile design.
Kent Street school cricket teams have won national competitions. They won at Brisbane in 1994, and at Melbourne in 2000 and 2005. The school also hosted the carnival in 1996, 2001, and 2006.
School Campus and Layout
The school is located on a 10-acre campus in East Victoria Park. The campus is built on a sloping hill. This means it has three different levels.
The school does not separate students by age group for most areas. However, there is a special Canteen Quad for younger students. Older students have their own Upper School Quad.
Aviation Course: Learning to Fly
Kent Street Senior High School started offering an aviation course in 1979. It was first available to Year 11 students. The first class had 27 students. In 1988, younger students could also join the course.
The school needed money to buy equipment for the aviation program. In 1994, Joan Terry donated an aircraft hangar. By 2000, the school worked with Edith Cowan University. This partnership helped promote aviation education in Western Australia. The aviation course became a course that counts towards university entry.
In 2008, the school partnered with Skywest Airlines. Skywest is now part of Virgin Australia. This partnership allows aviation students to get work experience. They can help aircraft engineers maintain planes. Students also get to fly with Virgin Australia pilots. They learn about aircraft weight, weather data, and navigation.
Rotary Residential College: A Home Away From Home
The Rotary Residential College is located on land leased from Kent Street Senior High School. This college helps high school students from country towns. It provides a place for them to live while studying special courses. These courses are often only available at city high schools.
Many groups helped make the college a reality. These included the government, businesses, and Rotary Clubs. The college has been open since 1991.
Since it opened, about 450 students have stayed at the college. These students have come from nearly 100 different country towns.
