Kerrick is a small, unincorporated community located in Dallam County, Texas, in the United States. An unincorporated community is a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. In the year 2000, about 60 people lived in Kerrick.
History of Kerrick
Kerrick is located along the Panhandle and Santa Fe Railway line. The area was first settled in 1906 by William Murdock and his family. However, the community was officially planned out and mapped in 1931.
The town was named after Harrison S. Kerrick. He was a railroad official and a United States Army colonel who owned some land in the community. The very first business in Kerrick was a grain elevator, which was built by Dan T. Wadley.
A post office was opened in Kerrick in 1933. It stayed open for many years until 2002. During World War II, Kerrick had the only airport between the cities of Amarillo, Texas and Denver, Colorado.
In 1949, Kerrick had five businesses and about 100 residents. By the 2000s, the population had decreased to 60 people. For fun and relaxation, people in Kerrick enjoyed community bands and sporting activities. In 2002, the local church moved into a building that used to be a café. The grain elevator continued to be an important part of the community. Many different programs and events also took place at the community center.
On June 13, 2023, people who watch for storms saw a tornado near Kerrick. This tornado was over an open field and did not cause any damage.
Geography of Kerrick
Kerrick is found where U.S. Route 287 and Farm to Market Road 807 meet. This location is south of the Oklahoma Panhandle.
Kerrick is about 36 kilometers (22 miles) northeast of Dalhart. It is also about 17 kilometers (11 miles) north of Stratford. The community is 18 kilometers (11 miles) north of Conlen. It is located about 100 kilometers (62 miles) north of Amarillo.
Education in Kerrick
The first school in Kerrick was started by William Murdock and his family. In 1950, the schools in Kerrick joined with the Stratford Independent School District. After this, the old Kerrick school building was changed into a community center for everyone to use.
