Club Career
Starting in Germany with 1. FC Köln
In June 2012, Wimmer moved from his Austrian team, LASK, to the German club 1. FC Köln. He made his first appearance for the team on August 5, 2012. He quickly became an important defender for the team. On November 29, 2013, he scored his first goal for Köln in a 3–0 victory over FC St. Pauli.
During the 2013–14 season, Wimmer and his team were amazing on defense. They set a record in Germany's second league, the 2. Bundesliga, by only letting in 20 goals all season. This great performance helped them get promoted to the Bundesliga, Germany's top football league.
In the Bundesliga, Wimmer continued to play well. He helped Köln stay in the top league by being a solid defender. He played in 32 matches during the 2014–15 season and was named one of the best defenders in the league by the famous football magazine Kicker.
Moving to England with Tottenham Hotspur
On May 29, 2015, Wimmer joined the Premier League team Tottenham Hotspur. He signed a five-year contract with the club. He played his first game for Tottenham in a friendly match against the MLS All-Stars in the United States.
At first, Wimmer didn't get to play much in the league. This was because Tottenham already had two very good centre backs, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld. However, the manager, Mauricio Pochettino, wanted to keep Wimmer in case of injuries.
His big chance came on January 23, 2016, when Vertonghen got injured. Wimmer stepped in and played in 15 games while Vertonghen was recovering. He played so well that Tottenham only allowed six goals in the nine league games he started. After his strong performance, he signed a new contract to stay with the team until 2021.
The next season, he again found it hard to get into the starting lineup. He got a chance to play in a big match against Arsenal, known as the North London Derby. In that game, he accidentally scored an own goal, and the match ended in a 1–1 draw.
Playing for Stoke City and Loan Moves
On August 28, 2017, Wimmer signed for Stoke City. The manager, Mark Hughes, was excited to have him, saying he was a very talented player. Wimmer made his first appearance for Stoke on September 9, 2017, in a 2–2 draw with Manchester United.
Wimmer had a difficult time at Stoke and struggled to find his best form. He didn't get to play very often, especially after a new manager, Paul Lambert, took over. At the end of the season, Stoke was relegated to a lower league.
To get more playing time, Wimmer went on "loan" to other clubs. This means he was still a Stoke City player but played temporarily for another team.
- He spent the 2018–19 season with Hannover 96 in Germany.
- For the 2019–20 season, he played for Royal Excel Mouscron in Belgium.
- In 2021, he went on loan to the German club Karlsruher SC.
Return to Austria and Move to Slovakia
On May 28, 2021, Wimmer left Stoke City and joined SK Rapid Wien, a top club in his home country of Austria. He played there for two seasons.
After his contract with Rapid Wien ended, he signed with Slovan Bratislava in Slovakia on June 8, 2023. On September 18, 2024, he scored his first goal for the club in a big UEFA Champions League match against Celtic.
International Career

Wimmer has also played for his country, Austria. He made his first appearance for the senior national team on November 15, 2013, in a 1–0 win against the United States.
He was chosen to be part of the Austrian team for UEFA Euro 2016, a major international tournament in Europe.
