General Khalid Shameem Wynne was a very important military leader in Pakistan. He was a four-star general in the Pakistan Army. From 2010 to 2013, he served as the 14th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee. This is a top leadership role in the Pakistani military.

Who Was General Khalid Shameem Wynne?

General Khalid Shameem Wynne was born on August 28, 1953. He passed away on December 30, 2017. He was known for his long and dedicated service to the Pakistan Army.

Early Life and School Days

Khalid Shameem Wynne came from a family with a military background. His father, Lieutenant Colonel Arshad Shameem Wynne, also served in the Pakistan Army. His father was even a close helper to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

Khalid went to different schools in army areas across Pakistan. In 1969, he joined Cadet College Hasan Abdal. This was after he finished his early schooling.

Joining the Army

In 1971, Khalid Wynne joined the Army. He finished his training in April 1972. He joined the same army group as his father, the 20th Punjab Regiment.

He continued his education while in the army. He studied at several important military colleges. These included the Pakistan Command and Staff College in Quetta and the Bundeswehr Command and Staff College in Germany. He also attended the National Defence University, Islamabad. He earned a master's degree in War Studies from Quaid-i-Azam University.

Important Roles in the Army

General Wynne had many different jobs during his 42 years in the military. He led various groups and taught at military schools.

  • He was a brigade major for two infantry brigades.
  • He commanded his own 20th Battalion of the Punjab Regiment.
  • He led two infantry brigades, including the 323 Infantry Brigade in Siachen. This area is known for its very cold weather.
  • He also led the 41st Infantry Division and the Southern Command in Quetta.

He also taught at the School of Infantry and Tactics in Quetta. He was also a teacher at the Pakistan Command and Staff College. He taught at the Pakistan Military Academy in Kakul too.

General Wynne also worked in important staff positions. He was the Deputy Chief of General Staff from 2006 to 2007. Later, he became the Chief of General Staff from April to October 2010.

Becoming Chairman Joint Chiefs

Before becoming Chairman, General Wynne was the Chief of General Staff at the Army Headquarters. He was chosen for this top role by President Asif Ali Zardari. This decision was made based on the advice of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.

From 2007 to 2010, he was the field commander of the XII Corps in Quetta. In this role, he oversaw military actions in the Baloch insurgency. He also dealt with issues from the war in the Tribal Areas.

In September 2010, it was announced that he would become a four-star general. He took over as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee on October 8, 2010. He retired from the army on October 8, 2013. He had served for 42 years.

A Sad Farewell

General Khalid Shameem Wynne passed away on December 30, 2017. He was traveling to Lahore when a tire on his vehicle burst. This happened near Chakri Interchange on the Rawalpindi–Lahore motorway.

He was laid to rest in Lahore on January 1, 2018. Many important people attended his funeral prayer. These included General Qamar Javed Bajwa, former president Asif Ali Zardari, and former army chief General Raheel Sharif.
