Playing for Clubs
Youth and College Soccer
Khiry Shelton was born in Fort Carson, Colorado. He grew up in Leander, Texas. In high school, he was a great soccer player for four years. In 2010, he was named the best offensive player. He also played for a youth team called Lonestar SC. With Lonestar, he won the Disney Showcase Championship in 2010.
After high school, Khiry went to Oregon State University. He joined their soccer team right away. He started the first six games of his first season. But then he got injured and could not play for the rest of the year. In his second year, he played 15 games. He scored goals in his first three games. He ended the season as one of the top scorers for his team. In his third year, he played 10 games and scored four goals again.
Starting with New York City FC
On January 15, 2015, Khiry Shelton was chosen as the second player in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft. This was a big deal for the new team, New York City FC. Their coach, Jason Kreis, said Khiry was their "top guy." They even turned down a lot of money to pick him.
Khiry played his first game for New York City FC in their very first Major League Soccer match. It was against another new team, Orlando City SC. Khiry came into the game in the 62nd minute. The game ended in a 1–1 tie. In his first season (2015), Khiry played 17 games. He scored one goal on May 15 against the Chicago Fire. He came on as a substitute and scored a tying goal in the last minutes of the game.
Playing for Sporting Kansas City
On December 14, 2017, Khiry Shelton moved to Sporting Kansas City. This happened as part of a player trade.
Time in Germany
On January 5, 2019, Khiry signed a contract with a German team called SC Paderborn 07. This team played in a league called the 2. Bundesliga.
Returning to Sporting Kansas City
On December 9, 2019, it was announced that Khiry Shelton would come back to Sporting Kansas City. He signed a new contract to play for them until at least 2022.
Playing for His Country
Youth National Teams
Khiry Shelton was first called to play for the United States under-18 team in 2010. He went to a training camp in California. Then, in December 2010, he traveled to Israel. He played in a tournament against teams from Israel, France, and Germany. He played in all three games but did not score any goals.
About five years later, Khiry was called to play for the United States under-23 team. This was in March 2015. He played in games against teams from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Denmark. He came into the game against Bosnia as a substitute. He played the whole game against Denmark. Again, he did not score in these games.
In January 2016, Khiry Shelton was called to play for the main United States squad. This was for friendly games against Iceland and Canada.
