Khondakar Ashraf Hossain (Bengali: খোন্দকার আশরাফ হোসেন; born January 4, 1950 – died June 16, 2013) was a very important writer from Bangladesh. He was known as a postmodern poet, someone who wrote essays, a translator, and an editor. He wrote more than eighteen books during his life.

Early Life and School Days
Khondakar Ashraf Hossain was born on January 4, 1950. His family lived in a village called Joynagar in Sarishabari, which is in Jamalpur, Bangladesh.
He studied English at the University of Dhaka. He earned his first degree (BA) in 1970 and his master's degree (MA) in 1971. Later, he went to the University of Leeds in 1981. There, he earned another master's degree in linguistics and ELT (English Language Teaching). He also got a special diploma in teaching English overseas.
He continued his studies and earned a PhD in English from the University of Dhaka. His PhD research was about how Western ideas influenced poetry in Bangladesh.
His Work and Writing
Khondakar Ashraf Hossain was a professor at the University of Dhaka. He even became the head of the English Department there. In 2013, he was chosen to be the vice-chancellor of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University. A vice-chancellor is like the main leader of a university.
He was a very popular teacher because he gave interesting lectures. He wrote many books of poetry and essays in both Bengali and English. He once said that he wasn't worried about how many people read his poetry.
Hossain was also a talented translator. He translated books from Bengali into English, and from German and English into Bengali. His own poems have been translated into several languages. These include English, German, French, Telugu, and Hindi.
He also started and edited a literary magazine called Ekobingsho. This magazine focused on new poetry from Bangladesh.
In the Theatre World
Khondakar Ashraf Hossain loved theatre. He supported a drama group called Nagorik since the 1970s. This group is one of the top theatre groups in Bangladesh. Hossain was both the president and a writer for this group.
His Passing
Khondakar Ashraf Hossain passed away on June 16, 2013. He was 63 years old. He had been in the hospital in Dhaka for a few days due to health problems. He died from a heart attack.
