History of Kiefer

Kiefer started out with a different name: "Praper." That's what it was called when its first post office opened in 1901. Around the same time, a railway line was built through Praper, connecting it to other towns. This railway is now operated by BNSF Railway.

Oil Boom Town

By 1906, Praper became a very busy place because of oil! It was a major shipping spot for crude oil from a nearby oil field called Glenn Pool. Because of all the oil activity, the post office was renamed "Kiefer" on December 12, 1906. The name Kiefer was chosen to honor one or more people named Kiefer who lived in the area.

Growing as a Town

Kiefer officially became a town on November 20, 1908. In 1910, the town had 1,197 people. By 1920, that number grew to 1,663.

In the early days, Kiefer was connected to Tulsa and Sapulpa by a streetcar line. This made it easier for people to travel between the towns.

A local newspaper called the Kiefer Searchlight was published weekly. It shared news about the town, the state, and the country.

Kiefer Today

Today, Kiefer is mostly a commuter town. This means that most people who live in Kiefer travel to other towns, especially Tulsa, for their jobs. However, Kiefer is also home to Bridge Crane Specialists, a company that designs and builds large crane systems.

You might also hear about the Kiefer Castle in town. It's a large house that looks like a fairy-tale castle!
