Kil Municipality (Kils kommun) is a special area in west central Sweden. It is like a local government district. This municipality is located in Värmland County. The main town and administrative center of the municipality is called Kil.
In 1971, a big change happened in local government. Several smaller areas, like Stora Kil, Järnskog, and part of Brunskog, joined together. This joining formed the Kil Municipality we know today.
The name "Kil" means "wedge" or "crack" in Swedish. This name comes from an old Swedish word that described a bay. This bay was located by a small lake called Hyn. The church was built near this bay a long time ago. The name "Kil" has been used since at least the 1400s. The town later became the center of a legal area called Kil Hundred, which existed in 1426. You can even see a wedge shape in the municipality's coat of arms.
Kil is also famous for something important in Swedish history. It was the place where Sweden's very first railroad was built in 1849.
