Where is Killelton Church?

Killelton Church is located about 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) east of a small village called Camp. You can find it just south of the N86 road in County Kerry.

History of Killelton Church

When was Killelton Church built?

The church was founded by a person known as Saint Eltan. The stone building you see today was built a very long time ago, around the 9th or 10th century AD. That means it's over 1,000 years old!

Restoration and Discoveries

In 1984, some work was done to restore parts of the church. During this restoration, a special holed stone was found. This type of stone has a hole through it and is similar to other ancient stones found at places like Gallarus.

What Does Killelton Church Look Like?

Killelton Church is a small, rectangular building. It's what's called an oratory, which is a small chapel or prayer room. The church area also includes a rectangular enclosure, two other rectangular buildings, and a bullaun. A bullaun is a stone with a bowl-shaped hollow, often used in ancient times for grinding or rituals.

Special Features of the Walls

At the bottom of the north and south walls of the church, there is a special raised part called a plinth. This feature is common in many very early oratories, showing how old and unique Killelton Church is.
