What is Kimmei Seamount?

Kimmei Seamount is like a giant mountain hidden deep under the ocean's surface. It's a type of volcano that formed on the seabed. Even though it's a volcano, it's not active anymore.

Kimmei's Ancient Past

This incredible seamount was formed a very, very long time ago. Scientists believe Kimmei started to form at least 47.9 million years ago. Its last eruption happened even longer ago, about 40 million years ago! That's why it's called an extinct volcano.

How Kimmei Got Its Name

Kimmei Seamount was named after a famous historical figure: Emperor Kimmei of Japan. Many features in the Hawaiian–Emperor seamount chain are named after emperors and empresses.
