King's Dock was a busy dock in Liverpool, England. It was located on the River Mersey and was an important part of the Port of Liverpool. This dock was in the southern part of the city's dock system. It connected to Wapping Dock in the north and Queen's Dock in the south. King's Dock actually had two smaller sections, called branch docks.

History of King's Dock

King's Dock was designed by an engineer named Henry Berry. It first opened way back in 1785. Later, more buildings for storing goods, called warehouses, were added by John Foster Sr.. The dock stopped being used in 1972. The two smaller branch docks were then filled in with land.

What Happened After Closure?

After the dock closed, the large open space was often used for concerts. A big tent and stage would be set up for these events. The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra played their "Summer Pops" concert series here.

Stadium Plans and Concerts

In the early 2000s, the football club Everton FC wanted to build a new stadium at this location. However, these plans did not work out by 2003. On July 28, 2004, the Irish pop band Westlife held a concert here. It was part of their "Turnaround Tour."

King's Waterfront Regeneration

In 2008, the area next to the Albert Dock was completely rebuilt. This project was called the King's Waterfront regeneration. It is a great example of how old industrial land can be turned into something new and useful.

This project brought many new things to the area. These include places for fun, homes, and conference facilities.

New Buildings and Facilities

  • The Echo Arena Liverpool is an 11,000-seat arena.
  • The convention centre is a large meeting place.
