Musical Career
Early Music (2006-2008)
Chip Tha Ripper started sharing his music on hip-hop websites and mixtapes in 2006. His music style is often described as slow and influenced by southern hip hop. One of his most popular songs in Cleveland was "Catch The Beat." This song was on his Money mixtape and helped introduce him to the music world.
In 2007, the song "Club Rockin" from his Money mixtape featured the singer Akon. Chip Tha Ripper chose to stay an independent artist, meaning he didn't sign with a big record company. In 2008, he often visited Chicago. There, he performed with the group Kidz in the Hall on their album The In Crowd. He also worked with producer Hi-Tek in 2007 and appeared on Kid Cudi's first mixtape A Kid Named Cudi in 2008. Chip Tha Ripper and Kid Cudi, both from Cleveland, worked together a lot during this time.
The "Interior Crocodile Alligator" Song
In 2007, Chip Tha Ripper appeared on a radio show called "Street Stars' Radio." He performed a freestyle rap, which is when a rapper makes up lyrics on the spot. This rap became known as the "S.L.A.B. Freestyle." However, it is now more famous as the "Interior Crocodile Alligator" song. This is because of its memorable last two lines:
"Interior crocodile alligator / I drive a Chevrolet movie theater."
These lines mean that Chip's Chevrolet car had a fancy leather interior that looked like reptile skin. It was also a large car with TV screens inside. Many young fans didn't understand the meaning at first. They thought the lines didn't make sense. But this part of his freestyle became very popular online, especially in funny internet memes.
Working with Other Artists (2009-2012)
In late 2009, Chip Tha Ripper released a mixtape called The Cleveland Show. It was named after the cartoon TV show. A song from this mixtape, "Fat Raps," featured rappers Big Sean and Currensy. The music for this song was made by Chuck Inglish.
On September 5, 2010, Chip Tha Ripper announced that he and Kid Cudi planned to form a music group called "The Almighty GloryUS." They both admired each other's music.
In 2009, Worth was featured on Kid Cudi's first album, Man on the Moon: The End of Day. This album was very successful, reaching number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Worth worked with Kidz in the Hall again in 2010 on their album Land of Make Believe. Also in 2010, he performed the song "The End" on Kid Cudi's second album, Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager. On February 18, 2011, Worth, Freddie Gibbs, and The Cool Kids formed a hip hop supergroup called "P.O.C." This name stood for "pulled over by the cops."
Changing His Name (2012-2018)
On August 9, 2012, Worth changed his stage name from "Chip tha Ripper" to "King Chip." He also shared that he had signed a contract with Creative Artists Agency, a company that helps artists. King Chip explained his name change on Twitter:
I am King Chip. Actually born in the ghetto slums of East Cleveland, Ohio. Rest in peace my mentor and former king, Hawk. His death made me....My birth name is Charles Jawanzaa Worth. Jawanzaa is Swahili and it means 'great leader and great warrior.' Look it up. I am King Chip.
King Chip performed on Kid Cudi's popular song "Just What I Am." This song was from Cudi's third album, Indicud (2013). On September 4, 2013, King Chip released his mixtape 44108. On December 26, 2013, he released a music video for his song "Action Plan" from the 44108 mixtape. His next music project was planned to be called Rebel Castles. On September 16, 2014, a special deluxe edition of 44108 was released to online music stores. It was released through King Chip's own music label, "Rebel Castles."
Recent Music (2019-Present)
In 2019, King Chip started using his old name, Chip tha Ripper, again for his new songs.
In early 2020, an old freestyle rap from Chip's 2007 radio show visit became very popular on TikTok. It gained over 70 million views. In the same year, Chip worked with New Zealand rapper Lil Mussie. They created a charity music project to help children in poverty. As of 2024, King Chip was featured on a song called "Don’t Worry." This song was released on September 18, 2024, by fellow Cleveland rapper and frequent collaborator Kid Cudi for the Moon Man soundtrack.
