Kingsland railway station is a busy train stop in Auckland, New Zealand. It's on the Western Line of Auckland's train network. The station is right next to the Kingsland town area. It's also super close to Eden Park, which is a big stadium. Eden Park is famous for rugby and cricket games. It's even the home ground for New Zealand's national rugby team, the All Blacks!
Because it's so close to Eden Park, many people use Kingsland station when they go to games. Special trains often run just to take fans to and from the stadium. The train signals were made better in 2011 to help with this.
Kingsland Station used to have only one platform. It was also in a slightly different spot. But in 2004, the station was moved and rebuilt. This was part of a big project to add a second track to the Auckland rail network. The old platform was taken down. However, its old shelter was saved. It is now used by the Glenbrook Vintage Railway.
Today, the station has two side platforms, one for each direction of travel. You can get to the station from New North Road and Sandringham Road. An overbridge lets you cross between the two platforms. There's also a subway that connects the platform going north to the Eden Park end of Sandringham Road.
Station History
Kingsland station has been around for a long time. It has changed quite a bit over the years to become the modern station it is today.
Early Days
- 1880: The station first opened on March 29. It was part of the North Auckland Line.
- 1993: The platform was updated. This was to make sure it could handle the newer diesel trains.
Modern Upgrades
- 2003: The old station building was removed.
- 2004: A brand new station was built with two platforms. This was part of a big project to add a second track to the Western Line. The cost for this upgrade was $4 million.
- 2009-2010: The platforms were made longer, reaching 115 meters. This allowed them to fit longer trains with six cars. New stairs and an underpass were also built. The underpass connects Sandringham Road to the northbound platform. These improvements cost $6 million.
- 2011: The train signals were upgraded again. This was very important for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. The new signals allowed trains to leave from both platforms in the same direction. This helped move many fans quickly. It was expected that 15,000 fans would use the station in just 70 minutes! Trains were planned to leave every five minutes, carrying 1,000 fans at a time.
- June–August 2011: The station shelters were improved. They were made from the same materials used to build The Cloud on Auckland's waterfront. This was also done for the Rugby World Cup.
