Mount Eden railway station is a train station in the Mount Eden suburb of Auckland, New Zealand. It is part of the Western Line on the Auckland train network. The station has an island platform, which means trains stop on both sides. You can get to the platform using a footbridge from Mount Eden Road or from a level crossing near Ngahura Street and Fenton Street.
History of Mount Eden Station
Mount Eden station has a long history. It first opened in 1880. This made it one of the first stations on the North Auckland Line.
In 1912, a new station building was built. The current island platform was also constructed around this time. A special signal box was added in 1914 to help control train movements.
Later, in 1964, the station lost many school passengers. This happened when some trains started stopping at Grafton station instead. The signal box was removed in 1967 because of new train control systems.
The old station building was sold in the mid-1990s. It was moved and is now a private home. In 2004, the station was upgraded to be more modern.
In 2019, it was announced that the station would close for four years. This closure started in June 2020. It is part of a big project to improve the train network.
The City Rail Link Project
Auckland Transport (AT) is building a major new train line called the City Rail Link. This project will change how trains move around Auckland. AT decided to change their plans for the City Rail Link. They removed a proposed station called Newton Station. Instead, they added a new platform at Mount Eden.
The new platform at Mount Eden will be in a trench, like New Lynn railway station. This means it will be open to the sky, not deep underground. Auckland's Mayor, Len Brown, said this change saved about NZD$150 million.
Lester Levy, who was the AT chairman, explained the benefits. He said the new design saves money and reduces building disruption. It also connects Mount Eden Station to the City Rail Link. Before, the new line would have bypassed the station. The new design also makes train services more reliable. This is because train lines will not need to cross over each other as much.
To connect the City Rail Link to the west (towards Swanson) and the east (towards Newmarket), Mount Eden station needed big changes. The station was closed and is being completely rebuilt. The Western Line tracks are being moved in some areas. This also means changes to the overhead power lines and signalling systems.
In October 2019, work began to demolish 30 buildings near the station. This was the first step in preparing the area for the new construction.
Getting to Mount Eden Station
Mount Eden Station is served by several bus routes. These include routes 64, 25B, 25L, 27H, 27W, and 27T. The SkyBus also stops here. SkyBus services travel between central Auckland and Auckland Airport.
