Golf Tournaments at Kingsmill
Kingsmill Resort has hosted many professional golf tournaments. From 1981 to 2009, it held 29 major events. These included tournaments for both the LPGA Tour (for women golfers) and the PGA Tour (for men golfers).
Explore the Historic Triangle
The resort is in a great location for exploring history. It is near the "Historic Triangle of Colonial Virginia." This area includes three important historical sites:
- Jamestown: The first permanent English settlement in North America.
- Colonial Williamsburg: A living history museum showing life in the 18th century.
- Yorktown: Where the final battle of the American Revolutionary War took place.
These sites are connected by the Colonial Parkway. You can also find fun theme parks nearby. These include Busch Gardens Williamsburg and Water Country USA. The area also has many hotels, restaurants, and other attractions.
How Kingsmill Resort Started
Kingsmill Resort was developed in the early 1970s. It was built on about 2,900 acres of land. This land was once part of the Kingsmill Plantation. The company Anheuser-Busch developed the resort. They also built a brewery and the Busch Gardens Williamsburg theme park in the area.
The idea for this development came from talks between August Busch II and Winthrop Rockefeller. Winthrop Rockefeller was involved with Colonial Williamsburg. Anheuser-Busch later bought Water Country USA in the 1990s. This added to their theme park business, which also included SeaWorld parks.
New Owners for Kingsmill
Over time, the brewing company Anheuser-Busch faced more competition. In 2008, a larger company called InBev bought Anheuser-Busch. InBev decided to sell off parts of Anheuser-Busch's business that were not about making drinks. This included the theme parks and Kingsmill Resort.
Many people in the community wondered who would buy these important local businesses.
Xanterra Takes Over
In July 2010, it was announced that Xanterra Parks and Resorts would buy and operate Kingsmill Resort. Xanterra is a very old company. It started as the Fred Harvey Company in 1875.
Xanterra operates hotels and lodges in many national and state parks. Some of their famous locations include the Grand Canyon in Arizona, Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, and Crater Lake National Park in Oregon. Xanterra is owned by a billionaire named Philip Anschutz. Before buying Kingsmill, Xanterra managed many hotels and had thousands of employees.
