History of Kinta
Kinta was started in 1901 by a man named George W. Scott. He was related to Greenwood McCurtain, who was the last chief of the Choctaw Nation before Oklahoma became a state. Scott named the town Kinta because it's the Choctaw word for "beaver." He chose this name because of a nearby stream called Beaver Creek.
George W. Scott moved his store to Kinta from another place called San Bois. He also set up the first post office inside his store. In 1903, he built the first permanent building in the town. San Bois used to be the capital of the Choctaw Nation. However, a new railroad, the Fort Smith and Western Railroad, didn't go through San Bois, so Kinta became a more important stop.
When Kinta was founded, it was part of the Moshulatubbee District of the Choctaw Nation.
Early Economy and Changes
For the first 30 years of the 1900s, Kinta's economy relied on two main things:
- Coal mining
- Making wood products
But in the 1930s, these industries started to decline a lot. Because of this, the railroad also stopped running. The town almost disappeared. However, Kinta managed to survive. By the early 2000s, the biggest employer in the town was the Kinta Public School System.
