The Kiskatinaw River is a cool river in northeastern British Columbia, Canada. Its name comes from the Cree people and means "river with steep banks." This river is a branch, or "tributary," of the larger Peace River.

Several parks are found along the Kiskatinaw River. Bearhole Lake Provincial Park and Protected Area is near where the river starts. One Island Lake Provincial Park is also close to its beginning. Further along, you'll find Kiskatinaw Provincial Park. This park is special because it has an old, curved wooden bridge. This bridge was built during the Second World War as part of the Alaska Highway. Its curved shape was a clever design to help protect it from bombs. Because of its sharp curve, it took nine months to build!

Many people enjoy fishing in the lower parts of the river. You can catch fish like walleye pike and rainbow trout here. The river also gives its name to the Kiskatinaw Formation. This is a type of rock layer that formed a very long time ago, during the Carboniferous period.

Where the River Flows

The Kiskatinaw River begins high up in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. It starts from Bearhole Lake in Bearhole Lake Provincial Park and Protected Area. Here, the river is about 1,050 meters (3,445 feet) above sea level.

The river flows first to the north, then to the east. Along its journey, it picks up water from other smaller streams. It flows past One Island Lake Provincial Park and then joins with the West Kiskatinaw River. The Kiskatinaw River continues north through a place called Upper Cutbank. It then meets Brassey Creek.

The river runs next to Highway 52 and passes west of Bear Mountain. It goes under Highway 97 and then the Alaska Highway. After this, it turns towards the north-east. Finally, the Kiskatinaw River flows through a canyon before joining the Peace River. It meets the Peace River west of the Alberta border, inside the Peace River Corridor Provincial Park. This is just east of the town of Taylor.
