Knollwood is part of two larger areas called Shields Township and Libertyville Township. It shares a ZIP Code with the nearby village of Lake Bluff. Kids living in Knollwood go to schools in Lake Bluff.

Knollwood used to have its own fire department. But since October 2018, the Libertyville and Lake Forest fire departments help protect the community. The Lake County Sheriff's Department provides police protection.

History of Knollwood

The name "Knollwood" first appeared in this area in the early 1900s. There was a train stop nearby called "Creamer Corners." Southwest of this stop was a large property of about 248 acres, which included two farms. This land was known as "Knollwood Farm."

In 1923, some rich businessmen from Chicago bought Knollwood Farm. They wanted to build a country club there. The Knollwood Country Club was officially started in 1924. The community that grew around this club then became known as Knollwood.

Knollwood Fire Department History

Knollwood's volunteer fire department started in January 1947. It was first called the Rockland Fire Department. Two years later, they bought their first fire engine. A building for the fire department was built in 1951.

In 1952, the department changed its name to the Knollwood Fire Department. The original fire station was replaced with a new, modern building in 2002. The new station opened in 2003.

In 2018, the people in charge of the fire district decided to end the Knollwood Fire Department's operations. This meant that other fire departments would now serve Knollwood.

Attempts to Join Lake Bluff

Over the years, there have been a few tries to make Knollwood an official part of the nearby village of Lake Bluff. These attempts happened in 1978, 1982, and 1996, but none of them were successful.
