Kodaira's history

Long ago, the area where Kodaira is now was part of Musashi Province. It was mostly empty land until the Tamagawa Aqueduct was built during the Edo period. This aqueduct brought water, which made it possible for people to farm and live there.

After the Meiji Restoration in 1878, Kodaira became part of Kitatama District in Kanagawa Prefecture. On April 1, 1889, Kodaira became a village with its own local government. In 1893, Kitatama District, including Kodaira, became part of Tokyo.

After the big 1923 Great Kantō earthquake, many universities and homes moved from central Tokyo to areas like Kodaira. This caused the population to grow a lot. Kodaira officially became a town in 1944 and then a full city on October 1, 1962.
