Kongnamul-bulgogi (Korean: 콩나물불고기) is a super yummy and modern Korean dish. Its name means "soybean sprout bulgogi". People often call it Kongbul (Korean: 콩불) for short. This meal mixes bulgogi (a type of Korean meat dish) with bean sprouts, rice cakes, different vegetables, noodles, and sometimes sausages. Everything gets cooked together in a big pan with a tasty, often spicy, sauce. It's really popular in South Korea, especially with teenagers, because it tastes great and is usually affordable!
How Kongbul Became Popular
This dish first became very popular in the city of Jeonju in South Korea during the 1980s. Many restaurants there served it. Later, in 2008, a restaurant chain called Kongbul opened. This helped the dish become super popular again across the country!
Making Kongnamul-bulgogi
To make Kongnamul-bulgogi, you'll need a few main ingredients. These include pork, bean sprouts, onions, red peppers, and green onions (scallions). Sometimes, perilla leaves are also added for extra flavor.
For the special sauce, people often use gochujang (a spicy red pepper paste), Korean plum extract (which adds a bit of sweetness), oyster sauce, and crushed garlic. Once the pork is cooked, it's mixed with the bean sprouts and the delicious sauce to complete the dish.
Different Ways to Enjoy Kongbul
The classic Kongbul mixes pork, bean sprouts, and the special sauce. But there are many fun ways to change up the recipe!
For example, you can add other meats like squid or chicken instead of pork. If you don't like spicy food, the sauce can be made sweet instead. You can also add extra ingredients like rice cakes, boiled eggs, noodles, dumplings, ham, or even cheese to make your Kongbul even more exciting!
