Kootingal is a town in New South Wales, Australia. It is part of the Tamworth Regional Council area. Many people call Kootingal a "satellite suburb" of Tamworth. This is because it's very close to Tamworth. Residents often use Tamworth's shops and services.

Kootingal was first set up as a place for Aboriginal people. The town's name comes from the local Aboriginal Kamilaroi language. In 2021, a count showed that 2,313 people lived in Kootingal.

Farming and Location

Kootingal is a town focused on farming. Farmers here grow lucerne, fruits, and vegetables. They also raise chickens for meat and eggs. The town sits in a small, fertile valley. This valley is part of the Moonbi Range, which is a section of the Great Dividing Range.

Kootingal is located on the northern side of the Cockburn River. You can find it between the villages of Moonbi to the north and Nemingha to the south. The town is about 474 kilometers (295 miles) northwest of Sydney. It is also 20 kilometers (12 miles) northeast of Tamworth. You can reach Kootingal by traveling on the New England Highway.

Getting Around Kootingal

The Kootingal train station is on the Main North railway line. Trains no longer go all the way to the Queensland border. However, a train service still stops in Kootingal twice a day. This is the NSW TrainLink Xplorer service. It travels between Sydney and Armidale in both directions. The station is less than a 20-minute drive from Tamworth.

Tamworth Buslines also runs a bus service. This bus connects Kootingal with Bendemeer and Tamworth.

Scouts Group

Kootingal has a Scout group that works with the nearby village of Moonbi. This group is called the Kootingal-Moonbi Scout group. It includes different age levels: Joey Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Scouts. It is a very active group and enjoys many fun activities together.
