History of Koppel
Koppel got its name from Arthur Koppel. He was part of a German manufacturing company called Orenstein & Koppel. By 1907, this company owned a large area of land, about 558 acres, in a nearby place called Big Beaver Township.
In 1912, Koppel officially became a borough. The very next year, Orenstein & Koppel gave some of their land to the new borough. This land was used to build schools and other important town buildings.
During World War I, in 1917, the U.S. government took over most of the town's property from Orenstein & Koppel. This happened because the company was German, and the government had a rule to take over property owned by enemies during wartime. This property was then sold to a new company, the Koppel Industrial and Equipment Company. Other manufacturing companies also had factories in Koppel over the years, like Pressed Steel Car Co. and Babcock & Wilcox.
