Kosuke Hagino (萩野公介, Hagino Kōsuke), born on August 15, 1994, is a Japanese former competitive swimmer. He was really good at the individual medley and 200 meter freestyle races.
Kosuke Hagino has won four Olympic medals. His biggest win was a gold medal in the 400 meter individual medley at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He also holds several Asian Records in different swimming events. He is one of only two Asian swimmers to be named World Swimmer of the Year.

Kosuke Hagino was born in Tochigi, Tochigi, Japan. He was born on August 15, 1994. He studied at Toyo University and was coached by Norimasa Hirai.
Kosuke Hagino's Swimming Career
Early Success: 2012 Olympic Games
Kosuke Hagino first became famous in international swimming at the 2012 Olympics in London. He swam very well in the 400 meter individual medley. He set a new Asian record in the heats. In the final, he won his first international medal, a bronze, and broke his own Asian record again!
Rising Star: 2013 World Championships
At the 2013 World Championships, Hagino competed in many events. He won his first silver medal at the World Championships in the 400 meter freestyle. He also set a new Japanese record in that race.
He won another silver medal in the 200 meter individual medley. Even though he only won two medals, he was the only swimmer at the competition to swim in six different individual races. This showed how talented and busy he was!
Big Wins: 2014 Pan Pacific and Asian Games
Pan Pacific Championships 2014
In 2014, Hagino had a fantastic time at the Pan Pacific Championships in Gold Coast. He won his first gold medal in the 400 meter individual medley. He also won another gold in the 200 meter individual medley, beating famous swimmers like Michael Phelps.
Overall, he earned five medals at this event: two gold and three silver medals. He showed he was one of the best swimmers in the world.
Asian Games 2014
Right after the Pan Pacifics, Hagino continued his success at the Asian Games in Incheon. He won his first gold medal in the 200 meter freestyle. He then won more gold medals in the 200 meter individual medley and the 400 meter individual medley. He also helped his team win gold in the 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay.
Hagino won a total of eight medals at the Asian Games: four gold, one silver, and three bronze. Because of his amazing performance, he was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Games. He was also the first and only Japanese swimmer to be named World Swimmer of the Year.
Olympic Glory: 2016 Olympic Games
Hagino competed in his second Olympic Games at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. This was a huge moment for him. He won a gold medal in the 400 meter individual medley, setting a new Asian record. This was Japan's first-ever gold medal in this event!
He also won a silver medal in the 200 meter individual medley. Plus, he earned a bronze medal as part of the Japanese team in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay.
Retirement: 2020 Olympic Games
At the 2020 Olympics (which happened in 2021 due to delays) in Tokyo, Hagino decided not to defend his 400 meter individual medley title. He finished sixth in the 200 meter individual medley. After the Games, in August 2021, he decided to retire from competitive swimming. He is now thinking about going to graduate school.
