Kovach Island (which is ostrov Kovach in Bulgarian) is a small, rocky island in Antarctica. It's the most western island in a group called the Onogur Islands. These islands are located off the northwest coast of Robert Island, which is part of the South Shetland Islands.
Kovach Island stretches about 630 meters (that's about 2,067 feet) from southwest to northeast. It is also about 240 meters (around 787 feet) wide. A narrow passage, only 100 meters wide, separates it from Grod Island. Long ago, in the early 1800s, people who hunted seals visited this area.
The island gets its name from a place called Kovach in Southern Bulgaria.
Where is Kovach Island Located?
Kovach Island is found in a specific spot in the South Shetland Islands. It is about 1.17 kilometers (or 0.73 miles) north of a place called Misnomer Point. It's also 760 meters (about 0.47 miles) southeast of Cornwall Island. And it lies 1.08 kilometers (about 0.67 miles) west of Shipot Point.
British explorers mapped this area in 1968. Later, Bulgarian teams also mapped it in 2009.
Maps of the Area
You can find Kovach Island on special maps of Antarctica. One helpful map is called "Antarctica: Livingston Island and Greenwich, Robert, Snow and Smith Islands." This map was created by L.L. Ivanov in 2009. It's a detailed topographic map, which means it shows the shape and features of the land.
