The Story of Kowloon Dairy
Kowloon Dairy officially became a company on March 21, 1940. At first, they only had 30 employees. They could only deliver fresh milk to the northern part of the Kowloon Peninsula. The company grew bigger when Li Lan Sang invested more money. During World War II, the company brought in 100 cows from Australia.
In its early years, the Kowloon Dairy factory was located where the Choi Wan Estate is now. Choi Wan Estate is a large group of public homes. In 1972, the Hong Kong government decided to use that land to build more homes for people. So, Kowloon Dairy moved its factory to Tuen Mun. Their farm moved to Yuen Long. The new farm was much larger, about 21,000 square feet. It had more than 300 cows.
Since about 1975, the family of Li Lan Sang has been in charge of running Kowloon Dairy.
In 2013, nearly 500 people worked for Kowloon Dairy Limited. They delivered products all over Hong Kong and Macau. At that time, the company made many different dairy products. These included milk and ice cream. In 1992, Kowloon Dairy Limited started selling products in China. They teamed up with a local company called Fengxing Milk. Together, they formed Kowloon Dairy (Guangzhou) Limited. Production in China began in 1994. Now, you can find Kowloon Dairy products in many parts of China. This includes Guangdong, Hainan, Fujian, Heilongjiang, and Yunnan.
The Southern Metropolis Daily newspaper once said about Kowloon Dairy: "many Hong Kong people drink it from childhood to adulthood and are loyal fans of it." This shows how important the brand is to many people.
Awards and Recognition
Kowloon Dairy Limited has received important awards for its food safety. In January 2007 and 2009, they earned special certifications. These were the HACCP Food Safety Management and ISO 22000 Certifications. They were given by the British Standards Institution. This was a big deal because Kowloon Dairy was the first dairy company in Hong Kong to get these awards.
Later, in September 2011, they received the same HACCP Food Safety Management and ISO 22000 Certifications again. This time, they were from SGS, another important certification body. These awards mean that Kowloon Dairy follows very strict rules to make sure their products are safe to eat.
