A Look Back at Kremlin's Past
Long ago, the area where Kremlin now stands was called Wild Horse. A famous old cattle trail, the Chisholm Trail, passed very close by. Imagine cowboys driving huge herds of cattle right through here!
In 1889, a railroad line was built through this area. This was the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. Soon after, a large area of land called the Cherokee Outlet was opened for new settlers. Many people came to live here.
Among the new settlers were farmers from Germany who had been living in Russia. They brought special seeds of wheat that could grow well in cold weather. This "winter-hardy Russian wheat" became a very important crop in the area. The town was later renamed Kremlin to honor these settlers.
