Early Life and Learning
Kris Pearn was born in Ontario, Canada. His family has a small farm where they raise donkeys. He went to high school at the Strathroy District Collegiate Institute.
His Work in Animation
Kris Pearn has worked on many animated films, often as a director, writer, or storyboard artist. A storyboard artist draws pictures that show how a movie scene will look, almost like a comic book version of the film.
Directing Animated Movies
Pearn co-directed Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 in 2013 with Cody Cameron. This was the first time he directed a major film. He even provided the voices for two characters in the movie, Sentinel Peter and Labcoat Jenny. This film was nominated for a Satellite Award for Best Animated or Mixed Media Feature.
In 2020, Pearn wrote and directed The Willoughbys, an animated comedy that was released on Netflix. He also helped create the story for this film. He worked on The Willoughbys for four years before it was released. For this movie, he wanted to make fun of common ideas found in children's films. He worked with character designer Craig Kellman, and they felt they could be very creative together. The music for the film was created by Mark Mothersbaugh, who also worked on Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.
In December 2024, Kris Pearn was chosen to direct an upcoming animated Ghostbusters movie.
Storyboarding and Writing
Before directing, Pearn was a skilled storyboard artist. He worked on the storyboards for Open Season (2006), which earned him a nomination for an Annie Award. He also received another Annie Award nomination for his storyboard work on Arthur Christmas (2011). In Arthur Christmas, he even voiced one of the elves!
He also helped with the story for Open Season: Scared Silly (2015). In 2017, he wrote an animated TV movie called The Great Northern Candy Drop.
Other Projects
Besides making movies, Kris Pearn has taught Character Design at Sheridan College in Ontario. He also illustrated a book called Project Superhero. This book was written by E. Paul Zehr, a professor who studies how our bodies work. They met at an event where Zehr was talking about how everyone has a "superhero" inside them.
