Kris Pearn's Early Life
Kris Pearn was born in Ontario, Canada. His family even owned a small donkey farm there! He went to school at the Strathroy District Collegiate Institute.
Kris Pearn's Animation Career
Kris Pearn has worked on many animated movies. He often helps create the storyboards, which are like comic book versions of the movie before it's animated.
Storyboarding Success
Pearn's amazing storyboard work for the movie Open Season (from 2006) earned him a special award nomination. It was for "Storyboarding in an Animated Feature Production" at the Annie Awards.
He also received another Annie Award nomination for his storyboard work on Arthur Christmas. In that film, he even lent his voice to one of the elves!
Directing Big Movies
Kris Pearn co-directed Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (2013) with Cody Cameron. This was the first time either of them directed a major film. They took over from the original directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Pearn also voiced some characters in the movie, like the Shrimpanzees and Sentinel Peter. For their directing work, Pearn and Cameron were nominated for a Satellite Award for Best Animated Feature.
Pearn later directed The Willoughbys (2020), an animated comedy released on Netflix. He also helped create the story and co-wrote the screenplay. He worked on this movie for four years before it came out! Pearn wanted the film to playfully make fun of common ideas in children's movies. He worked closely with character designer Craig Kellman, and they felt they could really be creative together. The music for The Willoughbys was created by Mark Mothersbaugh, who also worked with Pearn on Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.
Other Creative Work
Besides directing, Kris Pearn has taught Character Design at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario. This is where he helped new animators learn how to create characters.
He also illustrated a book called Project Superhero. This book was written by E. Paul Zehr, a professor who studies how our bodies work. They met at a TEDx event where Zehr was talking about "the superhero in you."
