Kristen Angela Johnston (born September 20, 1967) is an American actress. She is well-known for her roles in TV shows. She won two Emmy Awards for playing Sally Solomon in 3rd Rock from the Sun.
Kristen also starred as Holly Franklin in The Exes and Tammy Diffendorf in Mom. She has appeared in movies like The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas (2000), Music and Lyrics (2007), and Bride Wars (2009). Her book, Guts: The Endless Follies and Tiny Triumphs of a Giant Disaster (2012), was a New York Times best-seller. She also works to help high school girls through her group, SLAM.

Early Life and Education
Kristen Angela Johnston was born on September 20, 1967. Her father, Rod Johnston, was a state senator in Wisconsin. Kristen grew up in a suburb near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She finished high school at Whitefish Bay High School in 1985. Later, she earned a degree in drama from New York University.
Acting Career Highlights
Kristen Johnston started her acting career on stage in New York. She performed in many plays with different theater groups. She was even nominated for an award for her role in a play called The Lights.
Breakthrough on Television
A casting agent saw Kristen in The Lights. This led to her being chosen for the role of Sally Solomon in the TV show 3rd Rock from the Sun. She starred in the show from 1996 to 2001. For her work, she won two Emmy Awards for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
Film and Other TV Roles
Kristen's first movie was The Debt in 1993. She also appeared in Backfire! (1995) and played a sea hag in Thrill Ride (2016). She had guest roles on TV shows like Chicago Hope and Hearts Afire. She also narrated Microscopic Milton for the Disney Channel.
Her popular movie roles include The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas (2000), Music and Lyrics (2007), and Bride Wars (2009). In 1998, she was a spokesperson for the Clairol company.
Kristen also appeared in the TV show Sex and the City in 2004. In 2005, she was in six episodes of NBC's ER. She had a role in Ugly Betty in 2009 and appeared in Bored to Death.
Later Television Work
From 2011 to 2015, Kristen starred in the TV Land show The Exes. She played Holly Franklin, a divorce attorney. Her character lived across the hall from her former clients and friends.
In 2018, she joined the CBS show Mom as Tammy Diffendorf. She became a main cast member for the show's seventh and eighth seasons. Tammy is a unique character who is both funny and sometimes clumsy.
In May 2024, it was announced that Kristen was cast in a new Netflix comedy series. She will play a character named Carol, who is loyal to her sister.
Helping Others
Kristen Johnston has a group called SLAM. This group helps high school girls in New York City with their self-esteem. She has also supported the idea of creating special high schools that help students succeed.
