Kristen Welker (born July 1, 1976) is an American television journalist. She works for NBC News. She is well-known for her work as a White House correspondent. She also co-anchored Weekend Today. This is the Saturday edition of the Today show. From 2020 to 2023, she hosted it with Peter Alexander. Since September 17, 2023, she has hosted Meet the Press. This is the longest-running TV program in history.

Kristen Welker's Early Life and Schooling
Kristen Welker was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her parents are Harvey and Julie Welker. Her father is an engineer. Her mother works as a real estate agent. Kristen graduated from Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia in 1994. She then attended Harvard College. She earned a degree in American history in 1998. She graduated with high honors. While at Harvard, she also interned for the Today show in 1997.
Kristen Welker's Journalism Career
Kristen Welker started her career at local TV stations. She worked for ABC affiliates in Providence, Rhode Island, and Redding, California. In 2005, she joined NBC at their Philadelphia station, WCAU. There, she was a reporter and weekend anchor.
In 2010, she joined NBC News. She became a correspondent based in Burbank, California. By December 2011, she became an NBC White House correspondent. This meant she reported on the U.S. President and their team.
Welker often reported live from the White House press briefings for MSNBC. She also sometimes filled in as an anchor. She worked on NBC Nightly News and the Today show. On January 10, 2020, NBC announced that Welker would co-anchor Weekend Today. She started this role on January 11, 2020.
Hosting Important Debates
On October 22, 2020, Kristen Welker hosted a very important event. She moderated the final debate for the 2020 presidential election. This debate was between Donald Trump and Joe Biden.
On November 8, 2023, she co-moderated another big debate. This was the third 2024 Republican primary debate. She hosted it with Lester Holt and Hugh Hewitt in Miami, Florida.
Becoming Host of Meet the Press
On June 4, 2023, NBC announced a big change. Kristen Welker would take over as the anchor of Meet the Press. This is a famous Sunday morning news program. She officially started this role on September 17, 2023. She also began hosting Meet the Press Now on NBC News NOW on September 22, 2023.
For her first show as host, she interviewed former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Kristen Welker's Personal Life
Kristen Welker married John Hughes on March 4, 2017. Their wedding was in Philadelphia. They have two children. Their daughter was born on June 12, 2021. Their son was born on May 30, 2024. Both children were born through a surrogate.
