Kruisem (pronounced 'KROY-sem') is a town, also called a municipality, in Belgium. It's located in the province of East Flanders. This town is quite new! It was created on January 1, 2019, when two smaller towns, Kruishoutem and Zingem, decided to join together.
Kruisem covers an area of about 71.59 square kilometers (that's about 27.6 square miles). In 2022, around 15,876 people lived there. The municipality includes several smaller villages or deelgemeentes like Huise, Kruishoutem, Nokere , Ouwegem, Wannegem-Lede , and Zingem.
How Kruisem Was Formed
The government in Flanders, which is the region where Kruisem is located, encourages towns to merge. They even offer help and reasons for towns to do this! The idea is that bigger towns can sometimes work better and offer more services.
The local councils of Kruishoutem and Zingem both agreed to merge in 2017. This decision was then officially approved by the Flemish government in May 2018. So, on January 1, 2019, Kruisem officially became one new municipality.
Before they merged, Kruishoutem had about 8,086 people, and Zingem had about 7,552 people (as of January 1, 2018).
