What Was Zingem?
Zingem was once a separate municipality in East Flanders, a province in Flanders, Belgium. A municipality is a local area with its own government. It's like a small district or town that manages its own services.
The Zingem municipality was made up of three smaller towns: Huise, Ouwegem, and Zingem proper. In 2018, the whole area was home to over 7,500 people. It covered about 24 square kilometers, which is roughly the size of 2,400 football fields!
A New Beginning: The Merger
On January 1, 2019, something big happened for Zingem. It joined together with another nearby municipality called Kruishoutem. This process is called a merger. When two municipalities merge, they become one new, larger municipality.
The new municipality created by this merger is called Kruisem. So, Zingem is now a part of Kruisem. This helps them work together and share resources more effectively.
The Tiny Windmill
Zingem is special because it's home to a very unique windmill called the Meuleken 't Dal. This windmill is one of the smallest in all of East Flanders! Imagine how tiny it must be.
Long ago, this little windmill was owned by a famous abbey in Ghent called Sint-Pietersabdij. An abbey is a type of monastery where monks or nuns live. The province, which is a larger government area, helped to fix up the mill. Now, the Meuleken 't Dal can turn and grind again, just like it used to!
