Kue ape is a super popular traditional pancake from Indonesia. People also call it serabi Jakarta because it's a special kind of serabi from Jakarta. This yummy snack has a soft, fluffy center. Around the edges, it's thin and crispy, almost like a crepe. You can often find kue ape sold by street vendors, especially in big cities like Jakarta.

Sometimes, people call it kue cucur tipis, which means "thin kue cucur". It's different from the thicker kue cucur you might know. It used to have another nickname, kue tetek. But because that name was considered a bit rude, most Indonesians now just say kue ape. This means "what cake?" in Indonesian! It's also quite similar to another pancake called serabi Solo.

Making Kue Ape: Ingredients and Cooking

So, what goes into making these delicious pancakes? The main mix, called batter, is made from several ingredients. These include flour, rice flour, sugar, and a pinch of salt. They also add baking powder to make it fluffy and vanilla powder for a sweet smell. Finally, coconut milk is mixed in to make the batter smooth.

Sometimes, a special leaf called daun suji is added. This leaf gives the kue ape a pretty green color. It's a natural way to make the snack look even more appealing!

How Kue Ape is Cooked

Once the batter is ready, it's cooked in a small pan. This pan is often a special serabi wok or a small frying pan. Before cooking, the pan is greased with a little palm oil, margarine, or butter.

The shape of the pan is important. It's usually curved, like a small bowl. This shape helps the batter gather in the middle. This makes the center of the kue ape thick and soft. As the batter spreads out to the edges, it becomes very thin and crispy. This gives kue ape its unique texture: soft in the middle, crunchy on the outside!

Kue ape is a favorite snack, especially among school children. You can often find it sold alongside kue cubit, which uses a similar batter. Both are popular treats found in local marketplaces across Indonesia.
