Early Christian Settlers
Long ago, a group of Christians from Syria settled in this area. They had a big impact on how trade and farming grew in Kunnamthanam. Because of these settlers, the village became home to many Syrian Christian families. They often owned large farms and big houses, especially because they grew rubber trees for latex.
These Christian families believe their ancestors came from traders in Mesopotamia and other East Syriac Christians from a place called Venad. Kunnamthanam became an important place for trading spices like pepper and cardamom. Many Syrian Orthodox Christians worked as landowners, farmers, and merchants.

Padayani Festival
Kunnamthanam has several important temples. Two of the popular ones are Madathilkavil Bhagavathi Temple and Pulappukave Shiva Temple. The Pulappukave Shiva Temple is famous for its Padayani festival. This is an ancient festival that has been brought back to life in recent years. It's a colorful and traditional event.
Places to Visit
The Madathilkavu Bhagavathy Temple is one of the well-known temples in the Pathanamthitta District and is a landmark in Kunnamthanam.
You can also find St. Joseph Catholic Church in Kunnamthanam, located near the Kunnamthanam–Manthanam road.
Another interesting place is The Little Servants of the Divine Providence convent. This convent has a special place called the Zion Retreat Center where people can go for quiet reflection. They also have a Providence Home that helps take care of children who don't have parents and elderly people who need support.
