Kurrajong is a ghost town located in the Goldfields–Esperance region of Western Australia. It is found between the towns of Leonora and Leinster. A ghost town is a place that used to be a busy settlement but is now mostly empty and abandoned.
The Story of Kurrajong
The history of Kurrajong began with the discovery of gold in 1894. One of the first gold mines in the area was called the Diorite King. This mine's name was also used for the early settlement.
However, the land right next to the Diorite goldfield was too bumpy for building houses. So, a new town site was chosen about 3 kilometers away on flatter ground. In 1897, the land was surveyed, and the town was officially recognized in 1899.
Life in the Goldfields
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, transport was very different. In 1898, a company called Cobb and Co. started a coach service from Kurrajong to Coolgardie. Later, in 1903, they added another route to Leonora.
The town also had a hotel, which was an important place for people to stay and meet. The first hotel licence was given out in 1898. This hotel served the community for many years, staying open until 1918.
