Kurt Carr was born in Hartford, Connecticut, in the mid-1960s. His family believed in Jesus, but they were not very involved in church. When he was 13, Kurt started feeling more connected to church.
As a teenager, he acted and danced in a Broadway musical called On the Town. This show was at the Hartford Stage Company. He also became very active in his church's music group. At 17, Kurt felt he was meant to do something special with his life. After high school, he studied classical music at the University of Connecticut. He earned a degree in Fine Arts.
His Music Journey Begins
Starting His Career
Kurt Carr began his music career by playing piano for Andrae Crouch for one year. Then, in 1986, he became the music director and pianist for Rev. James Cleveland. He worked with Rev. Cleveland for seven years until Rev. Cleveland passed away.
Later, Kurt became the director of the West Angeles Church of God in Christ Choir. This gave him chances to work with many famous artists. Some of these included Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Yolanda Adams, and Kirk Franklin. During this time, Kurt also started his own gospel group called The Kurt Carr Singers.
Their first small album, I'm Glad, came out in 1988. After signing with Light Records, their first big album, Together, was released in 1991.
Growing Success
The group then signed with GospoCentric Records. They released Serious About It! in 1994. This album did well on the music charts. In 1996, they recorded their next album, No One Else, which came out in 1997. This album featured the popular song "For Every Mountain."
In 2000, Kurt Carr released Awesome Wonder. This album included his most famous song, "In the Sanctuary." This song became very popular and helped the group become even more successful. The album even earned a gold award for selling many copies. Because "In the Sanctuary" was so well-known, Kurt Carr started producing and writing songs for other artists. These included Byron Cage, Tramaine Hawkins, and Bishop Paul S. Morton.
In 2004, Kurt Carr recorded The Kurt Carr Project: One Church. This album came out in 2005 and was a big hit. It focused on the idea of a church for everyone, no matter their background. Songs like "God Blocked It" and "God Great God" became favorites. In 2008, Kurt Carr released his first two-disc album, Just the Beginning.
