Kyoho grapes are a very popular type of grape, especially in East Asia. They are known for being large and very sweet. These grapes have a dark purplish-black color. They have big seeds and juicy flesh.

Kyoho grapes are a special kind of grape called a hybrid. This means they were created by crossing two different grape types. They were first made in Japan.

About Kyoho Grapes

Kyoho grapes are a mix of two grape varieties: Ishiharawase and Centennial. A Japanese plant expert, Yasushi Ohinoue, created them. This happened in the 1930s and 1940s.

These grapes are similar to Concord grapes. Like Concords, Kyoho grapes are "slip-skin" grapes. This means their skin comes off very easily from the fruit. The seeds inside Kyoho grapes are bitter. Because of this, people usually don't eat the skin or the seeds.

Kyoho grapes taste a bit like Concord grapes. Many people know the Concord grape flavor from grape jelly or grape juice. Kyoho grapes are very sweet and have only a little bit of sourness.

Where Kyoho Grapes Come From

Kyoho grapes were first grown in 1937. This was in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. They got their name, Kyoho, in 1946. The name "Kyoho" means "giant mountain grape."

These grapes are very popular in several countries. You can find them in Japan, Taiwan, mainland China, and Korea. People love them because they are big and very sweet.

Growing Kyoho Grapes

Kyoho grapes are grown in many places around the world. In Japan, they are grown in Nagano Prefecture and Yamanashi Prefecture. They are also grown in California's Central Valley in the United States. Other places include Changhua County in Taiwan and Chile.

As of 2015, Kyoho was the most grown grape variety in the world. It covered a huge area of land, about 365,000 hectares. Most of these grapevines, more than 90%, are found in China.

How Kyoho Grapes Are Used

Kyoho grapes are often eaten as a dessert. People usually peel them before eating. The juice from Kyoho grapes is also used to make drinks. One popular drink is called chūhai, which is a type of cocktail.
