Kyriacos Costa Nicolaou (born July 5, 1946) is a famous Cypriot-American chemist. He is a world expert in building complex molecules that are found in nature. This special skill is called total synthesis.

Imagine finding a very complicated and useful object in nature, like a special medicine made by a plant. Total synthesis is like figuring out how to build that exact same object from scratch in a lab, using only basic chemical ingredients. Nicolaou is like a master architect for molecules. He is currently a professor of chemistry at Rice University in Texas.

Early Life and Education

K. C. Nicolaou was born in Karavas, a town on the island of Cyprus. He lived and went to school there until he was 18 years old. In 1964, he moved to England to learn English and get ready for college.

He studied chemistry at the University of London. After earning his first degree, he continued his studies to get a Ph.D., which is the highest degree in a subject. In 1972, he moved to the United States to continue his research. He worked at top universities like Columbia University and Harvard University. Later, he became a professor at the University of Pennsylvania.

A Career of Building Molecules

In 1989, Nicolaou moved to San Diego, California. He worked as a professor at the University of California, San Diego, and was also the Chairman of the Department of Chemistry at The Scripps Research Institute. In 2013, he moved to Rice University to continue his work.

Nicolaou's research team focuses on organic chemistry. They are famous for finding new ways to build molecules and for completing the total synthesis of many natural substances.

The Race to Make Taxol

One of Nicolaou's biggest achievements was making Taxol in the lab in 1994. Taxol is a very important medicine used to treat cancer, but it was originally found in the bark of a rare tree. This made it hard to get enough of it to help patients.

Making Taxol in a lab was a huge challenge because its molecule is very large and complex. Nicolaou's team was in a friendly race with another scientist, Robert A. Holton, to be the first to build it. Both teams succeeded around the same time. This amazing achievement was reported in the news all over the country.

Amazing Molecules He Built

Over his career, Nicolaou and his team have successfully built many important and complicated molecules found in nature. Here are a few of them:

  • Calicheamicin γ1 (1992) - A substance with powerful anti-tumor properties.
  • Taxol (1994) - A famous anti-cancer drug.
  • Brevetoxin B (1995) - A complex toxin produced by ocean algae.
  • Vancomycin (1998) - A powerful antibiotic used to fight serious bacterial infections.
  • Viridicatumtoxin B (2013) - A complex molecule made by a type of fungus.

Books for Chemists

Dr. Nicolaou has also shared his knowledge by writing books. He is most famous for a series of books called Classics in Total Synthesis. These books teach other chemists how famous molecules were built. They are very popular in the world of chemistry.

Awards and Honors

For his incredible work, K. C. Nicolaou has received many awards from all over the world. These awards recognize him as one of the most important chemists of our time. Some of his top honors include:

  • The Wolf Prize in Chemistry (2016), a very famous international award.
  • The Benjamin Franklin Medal in Chemistry (2011).
  • The Arthur C. Cope Award (2005), a top prize from the American Chemical Society.
  • He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, which is a group of the best scientists in the country.
  • He was also elected as a Foreign Member of the Royal Society (2013), the top science academy in the United Kingdom.
