Exploring L'Estartit's Geography
L'Estartit stretches from Cala Montgó in the north to the Ter River in the south. It reaches about three kilometers inland from the coast. The area includes hills like Rocamaura and Torre Moratxa.
What is the Montgrí Massif?
The Montgrí Massif is a mountain range that meets the sea. It forms about 9 kilometers of high, rocky coastline. Here you can find several small coves, like Cala Calella and Cala Pedrosa. There are also different caves, such as the Roca Foradada tunnel and the Tres Coves.
The Medes Islands are small islands in the sea. They are actually part of the Montgrí Massif mountain range that rises out of the water.
What was the LORAN Base?
To the west of Torre Ponça, there was once a place called the Alt de la Pedrosa. This was a flat area where the LORAN base was located. It used to be a military base for the United States Coast Guard, but it has now been taken down.
L'Estartit's Economy: From Fishing to Tourism
L'Estartit was first a small fishing village. But starting in the 1960s, many tourists began to visit the Costa Brava. This brought a lot of visitors to L'Estartit during the summer.
How Tourism Changed the Town
The town grew very quickly over the next 20 years. First, houses and villas were built on the hills around the harbor. Later, hotels, apartment buildings, and campsites appeared along the beach.
The tourism industry also brought many new people to live and work in the town. Most of these workers came from other parts of Spain. Tourists visiting L'Estartit mainly come from France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, and the Netherlands. Many people from Barcelona also visit for the weekend.
Why is Tourism Still Important?
Even though the town grew a lot, it still has special attractions. The amazing underwater world around the Medes Islands is a big draw. L'Estartit is known as one of the best places in the world for scuba diving. This means tourists come for longer than just the summer beach season.
The town also has a large and well-equipped sports marina. Many nearby golf courses attract golfers. These things keep divers, sailors, and golfers coming back every year. This has helped the area's economy.
What is the Club Nàutic Estartit Port?
The port of the Club Nàutic Estartit is a great place for boats. It has 687 spots for boats ranging from 4 to 25 meters long. These spots have water and electricity. The port also has parking, a crane, a ramp, and a place to collect waste. There is also a social club and Wi-Fi.
Despite the focus on tourism, L'Estartit still has some farming and livestock activities. The town has also kept its old fishing houses and charming cobbled streets from before the 1960s.
A Brief Look at L'Estartit's History
The first records of L'Estartit appeared in the 17th century. At that time, attacks by pirates on the Catalan coast had become less common. Until the mid-20th century, the town's growth was linked to its sea activities.
Its port allowed products like wheat, rice, wine, and spirits to be sent by sea. These goods went to big markets like Barcelona. More recently, some people in L'Estartit have wanted the town to become its own separate municipality. However, these efforts have not been successful so far.
