LaFayette (pronounced luh-FAY-et) is a city in the state of Georgia, United States. It is the main city, or county seat, of Walker County. In 2020, about 6,888 people lived there. LaFayette is also part of the larger Chattanooga, TN-GA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History of LaFayette
LaFayette was first started in 1835. It was named Chattooga back then. It became the main city for the new Walker County. The county was named after Freeman Walker, who was a United States senator.
In 1836, the city's name was changed to LaFayette. This was to honor Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette. He was a French nobleman who helped America during the American Revolutionary War.
Later, in 1864, LaFayette was part of an important event during the American Civil War. A battle called the Battle of LaFayette happened here. This was during the Atlanta campaign, a major military plan.

LaFayette is located in the northwest part of Georgia. Its exact location is 34°42′35″N 85°17′2″W / 34.70972°N 85.28389°W.
The city covers a total area of about 8.1 square miles (20.9 square kilometers). All of this area is land, meaning there are no large lakes or rivers within the city limits.
