LaTocha Reney Scott-Bivens, also known simply as LaTocha, is an American singer and songwriter. She sings both R&B and Gospel music. LaTocha is famous for being a member of the popular R&B group Xscape. This group became very well-known in the 1990s. She also acts sometimes.
About LaTocha Scott
LaTocha Scott was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on October 2, 1973. Her father, Rev. Randolf Scott, was a minister. Her mother, Gloria McFarlin, worked as a teacher. LaTocha has a younger sister, Tamika Scott, who is also a member of Xscape.
Early Life and Music
LaTocha started singing in church when she was only 6 years old. She also sang at weddings and local talent shows. By the age of 11, she had recorded her first song with her sister Tamika. LaTocha went to TriCities High School of Performing Arts in Atlanta. She later transferred to Tri-Cities High School in East Point, Georgia, and graduated in 1991.
Family Life
In 1995, LaTocha married Rocky Bivens, who is a music manager. Their son, Jamon, was born in August 1997. LaTocha also follows a plant-based diet. She even released a cookbook called LaTocha Planted Lifestyle.
LaTocha's Music Career
LaTocha Scott has had a long and successful career in music. She is best known for her work with the group Xscape. She has also released her own solo music.
Xscape's Early Days (1991–1992)
Before joining Xscape, LaTocha sang with a group called Precise. While at Tri-Cities High School, her sister Tamika met Kandi Burruss. The three of them started singing together. They then added a fourth member, Tamera Coggins, but she did not stay long. Soon, Tameka "Tiny" Cottle joined them, and the group Xscape was officially formed.
After a big performance on BET's Teen Summit in 1992, the girls met music executive Ian Burke. He became their manager. Xscape soon caught the attention of Jermaine Dupri, a famous music producer. He signed the group to his record label, So So Def Recordings.
Xscape's Albums and Success (1993–1999)
Xscape released their first album, Hummin' Comin' at 'Cha, on October 12, 1993. This album was very popular and sold over a million copies. It reached number seventeen on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. Two songs from the album, "Just Kickin' It" and "Understanding", became top 10 hits. They even reached number one on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The group also sang on the soundtracks for the movies The Mask and Panther.
In 1995, Xscape released their second album, Off the Hook. This album also sold over a million copies. Songs like "Feel So Good" and "Who Can I Run To" were popular. In 1996, Xscape was featured on MC Lyte's song "Keep On, Keepin' On". This song also reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The group also appeared on the soundtracks for the films Love Jones and Soul Food in 1997.
Xscape's third album, Traces of My Lipstick, came out in 1998. It included hit songs like "The Arms of the One Who Loves You" and "My Little Secret". LaTocha helped write "My Little Secret" with Jermaine Dupri. She won an award for this song. LaTocha left Xscape in 1999 to start her solo career.
LaTocha's Solo Journey (1998–2005)
LaTocha began performing as a solo artist. She sang a song called "Promises" for NFL Jamz in 1998. In 1999, she released the song "Liar Liar" for The Best Man movie soundtrack. She signed a record deal with Sony Urban, but her first solo album with them was never released.
In 2002, LaTocha worked with rapper Trick Daddy on his song "Thug Holiday". She later finished her own first solo album, Solo Flight 404. It included the song "Still Ghetto". In 2004, LaTocha, Tamika Scott, and Tameka "Tiny" Cottle tried to bring Xscape back together. They released a song called "What's Up" in 2005, but the group soon broke up again. Around this time, LaTocha also appeared in the 2005 comedy movie, Fair Game.
Recent Career (2012–Present)
In 2012, LaTocha released a new song called "Bad Timing". In 2013, she was on the second season of the TV One show R&B Divas: Atlanta.
In 2017, LaTocha reunited with Xscape members Tamika Scott, Kandi Burruss, and Tameka "Tiny" Harris. They went on tour together. After the first tour, Kandi Burruss decided not to continue. The other three toured as a group called 'Xscap3'. Kandi Burruss later rejoined them for future tours.
