Becoming a Music Star
Joining Xscape
Before joining Xscape, LaTocha sang with a group called Precise. While at Tri-Cities High School, her sister Tamika met Kandi Burruss. The three girls started singing together. They added a fourth member, Tamera Coggins, but she didn't stay long. Soon, Tameka "Tiny" Cottle joined them, and the group Xscape was officially formed.
Xscape had their first big performance on BET's Teen Summit in 1992. After this, they met record executive Ian Burke, who became their manager. The group then caught the attention of Jermaine Dupri. He signed Xscape to his record label, So So Def Recordings.
Xscape's Hit Albums
Xscape released their first album, Hummin' Comin' at 'Cha, on October 12, 1993. This album was a big success. It sold over a million copies and was certified platinum. Two songs from the album, "Just Kickin' It" and "Understanding", became top 10 hits. They even reached number one on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
In 1995, Xscape released their second album, Off the Hook. This album also sold over a million copies and was certified platinum. It featured popular songs like "Feel So Good" and "Who Can I Run To". In 1996, Xscape was featured on MC Lyte's hit song "Keep On, Keepin' On".
Their third album, Traces of My Lipstick, came out in 1998. It included top 10 hits such as "The Arms of the One Who Loves You" and "My Little Secret". LaTocha helped write "My Little Secret" and won an award for it. In 1999, LaTocha left Xscape to start her own solo music career.
Solo Music and Reunions
LaTocha released a solo song called "Liar Liar" in 1999. It was part of The Best Man movie soundtrack. She signed with Sony Urban, but her first solo album was not released due to label issues. She later completed her own album, Solo Flight 404, which featured the song "Still Ghetto".
In 2004, LaTocha, Tamika Scott, and Tameka "Tiny" Cottle tried to bring Xscape back together. They released a song called "What's Up" in 2005, but the group broke up again shortly after. Around this time, LaTocha also appeared in the 2005 movie Fair Game.
In 2012, LaTocha released a new song called "Bad Timing". The next year, in 2013, she starred in the TV show R&B Divas: Atlanta on TV One.
