La Campa is a small town, also known as a municipality, in the Lempira Department of Honduras. It is located about 18 kilometers (11 miles) from Gracias, which is the biggest town nearby.

Many people in La Campa and other villages close by, like San Manuel Colohete, are from the Lenca group. Even though La Campa is small, there are many tiny communities spread out in the hills above it, such as Cruz Alta. These communities grow coffee to drink and sell. They also grow food like rice, mangoes, different kinds of bananas, and black beans. They have their own elementary schools and churches too.

The town is famous for its Lenca pottery. There are two main types of pottery: black and white (smoked) pots, and red-glazed pots. La Campa is known for the red-glazed style. Much of the pottery sold in La Campa comes from the hillside villages, where people are very skilled at making it. The town also has a large Spanish church that was built in the 1700s. La Campa sits in a deep river valley near Montaña Celaque, which is the tallest mountain in Honduras.

History of La Campa

In 1582, La Campa was a small village. It had 20 people who paid taxes to a Spanish leader named Mario Cana. Before that, it was known as "Tecauxinas." In 1887, it was a village that belonged to Gracias. La Campa officially became its own municipality in 1921. The name "La Campa" comes from an old saying used by miners. It meant finding shelter from the rain.

Natural Resources

La Campa is not very high up, so it's not the best place for growing coffee. However, it has large flat areas that are great for planting vegetables. A big advantage for La Campa is its many fresh water springs. Most of these springs come from inside Celaque National Park.

Population and People

The people in La Campa are mostly of mixed heritage. The majority are descendants of the indigenous people who lived in this area and nearby villages before the arrival of Europeans.

In 2013, the La Campa municipality had a population of 6,515 people. Most of these people, about 80.45%, were indigenous, mainly from the Lenca group. About 18.25% were Mestizo (people of mixed European and indigenous heritage). A small number were Black or Afro-Honduran (0.95%) or White (0.35%). The La Campa municipality includes 5 main villages and 49 other smaller settlements.

Fun Things to Do

Many hotels in Gracias organize trips to La Campa. It is part of the "Colosuca" trail, which is a route connecting several historic towns. The town's old, well-preserved church is one of the main attractions for visitors.

A special local holiday and festival is "San Matias" day. This celebration takes place from February 15th to February 28th each year.
