La Esmeralda is a small town in Venezuela, located in the Amazonas State. It's the main town of the Alto Orinoco Municipality. Its name means "the emerald." The local Ye'kuana people have their own names for it, like Medadanña or Kadawanadunña.
This town sits right on the bank of the famous Orinoco river. It's only about 9 miles (14.5 km) from a special waterway called the Casiquiare canal. This canal connects the Orinoco river to the mighty Amazon River, which is pretty cool!
La Esmeralda has about a hundred homes. It also has a school for kids, an airfield where small planes can land, and a military outpost.
Geography
La Esmeralda is located on the shore of the Orinoco river. This river is one of the longest rivers in South America. The town is very close to the Casiquiare canal. This natural canal connects the Orinoco river system to the Amazon River system. This means you could travel by boat from one huge river to the other!
Climate
La Esmeralda has a tropical rainforest climate. This type of climate is often called "Af" in the Köppen climate classification system. This means it's hot and rainy all year round. The rainfall is usually very heavy.
