La Fargeville is a small community called a "hamlet" in New York, United States. It is located in Jefferson County, within the town of Orleans. In 2020, about 537 people lived there.
The hamlet is named after John Frederick La Farge. He was an important person who helped start the town. La Fargeville used to be a larger official "village," but it changed back to a hamlet in 1922.
La Fargeville is north of a city called Watertown. It has one school, LaFargeville Central School. This school teaches students from Pre-Kindergarten all the way to 12th grade.

History of La Fargeville
Early Settlement and Naming
La Fargeville was first settled around 1816. Back then, it was known as "Log Mills." This name came from a sawmill built there to cut logs.
John Frederick La Farge arrived in 1826. He was an immigrant from France. He had already become wealthy from a business in New Orleans. In the 1820s, he started buying land and building homes in Jefferson County. His investments were so important that the community was named after him. His son, John La Farge, later became a famous artist.
By the year 1850, the population of La Fargeville had grown to about 300 people.

Location and Rivers
La Fargeville is located in the northern part of Jefferson County. It sits in the middle of the town of Orleans. The Chaumont River flows through the center of the community. This river flows southwest and eventually reaches Lake Ontario.
Area and Water
The total area of La Fargeville is about 8.7 square kilometers (3.37 square miles). Most of this area is land, about 8.6 square kilometers (3.31 square miles). A small part, about 0.1 square kilometers (0.06 square miles), is water.
Roads and Connections
La Fargeville is an important meeting point for two main roads: New York State Route 180 and New York State Route 411.
- Route 180 goes north about 7 miles (11 km) to Fishers Landing on the St. Lawrence River. It goes south about 14 miles (23 km) to Dexter.
- Route 411 goes east about 4 miles (6 km) to Interstate 81. It continues about 9 miles (14 km) to Theresa.
Another road, County Road 181, connects the hamlet to Clayton on the St. Lawrence River, about 7 miles (11 km) to the west.
Watertown is the main city in Jefferson County. It is about 17 miles (27 km) south of La Fargeville. You can get there by taking Routes 180 and 12.
